Orange Earl Grey Cookies: The New Holiday Favorite

Your New Favorite Cookie
Baking cookies is a typical holiday tradition. For as long as I can remember, I have baked cookies with my mother. However, we have never ventured outside our dedicated cookie recipes. This year let’s break the cycle. Since I’m a tea lover and my mother is a tea lover, let’s make tea cookies. Inspired by Earl Grey Lavender cookies by Amy Ho, I decided to create something a bit unique.

Introducing Orange Earl Grey Cookies!

I love the flavor of orange in all things. Citrus makes things taste good and Earl Grey is my favorite black tea. The bergamot scent is heavenly. This shortbread treat is packed with flavor and smells delightful.

Ingredients:

  • 2 sticks of butter at room temperature
  • 1 1/4 cups sugar/sugar substitute
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp ground Earl Grey tea
  • 1/2 tsp ground orange peel
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt

Directions:

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (177°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Beat together butter and sugar/sugar substitute on medium speed until smooth. Once smooth, add the egg and vanilla and beat to combine.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, Earl Grey tea, orange peel, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  • Add the flour mixture to the butter mixture and mix on low speed until combined.
  • Using a tablespoon, portion dough into 14-16 balls on baking pan(s). (I found that the dough balls didn’t expand during baking. See photo. In my second batch, I used the spoon to flatten out each cookie).
  • Bake for 12- 15 minutes or until bottom is a golden brown.
  • Remove the cookies from the oven and allow them to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes.

Bonus Tips: Sprinkle the tops of the pressed dough balls with sugar and orange peel before baking. To make it more festive, add a 1/4 cup of cranberries.
